Postal Numbering

The Council's Building Control Department is responsible for allocating postal numbers to houses and buildings in the Banbridge District as stipulated by Section 11 of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) (N.I.) Order 1995.

House Numbering
All dwellings within a new development are allocated a provisional site number. These numbers are different from the house number which the Council allocates. The Council's Building Control Department is responsible for allocating house numbers for each new dwelling within the development. The house number is generally not allocated until all the dwellings in the development have commenced. This is due to developers changing the layout and number of dwellings in a development. The Council makes every attempt to avoid the use of A or B suffixes where possible and tries to refrain from using the No. 13 in new developments as this is seen as being unlucky by some prospective purchasers. If you are an new home owner in a new development and you have an enquiry about the number of your house, you can contact the Council's Building Control Department.

Postal Numbers for Mobile Homes
The Council's Building Control Department also allocates numbers to mobile homes placed on sites in rural areas. These generally will have the same number as the dwelling being built on that site. However, the owner may be awaiting planning approval and may need a postal number for the receipt of bills and other correspondence. In order to help Building Control provide you with a number, you need to send in a letter to the department requesting a postal number along with a location plan identifying the proposed site and where it is located in relation to adjacent main roads in the area. If you are currently living in a mobile home in a rural area and you have an enquiry about the number of your site/house, you can contact the Council's Building Control Department.

Postcode Notification
Once the Council's Building Control Department has allocated house numbers to new developments, it is then responsible for notifying all relevant authorities of the new buildings. These include the Planning Service, Land Registry, NI Fire and Rescue Service and Royal Mail. Royal Mail will only allocate a postcode for the property once the Council has notified them of a new postal address. Enquires about postcodes can be dealt with by Royal Mail on 08456 045060. Alternatively, you can email: addressdevelopment@royalmail.com
